St. Joseph State Park, Cape San Blas, FL Saturday, May 25, 2013
We left Cedar Key, Florida, and drove the back roads that were as close to the Gulf of Mexico as we could get so that we could see the water.  We took Alt 27 out of Cedar Key, then at Perry we went west on 98 which is a pretty drive mostly along the coast going through towns like Carrabelle, Eastpoint and Appalachicola (we took a day trip to explore this small quaint town).  The entrance to the St. Joseph State Park is off of 98.  The park is a thin peninsula with awesome beaches, white dunes, palm trees, tall pine trees, marshes, a St. Joseph Bay side and an Gulf of Mexico side and much more.  We got to St. Joseph State Park on December 23 and winter storms were forming so most of our photos were taken on cloudy days.  We bundled up and went to the beach every few hours, took walks, went biking and loved this park - even if it was stormy!  At the tip of the park is a seven mile hiking path but it was too cold for us to do that.  We were told there are snakes in the warmer seasons, we did see deer near our RV as well as owls and hawks.  We even saw two dolphins pop up out of the water near the beach, just for a split second.  We waited for thirty minutes to see if they would show themselves again but noooo!  We enjoyed spending Christmas at this park and so did a lot of other campers, we met new friends, RVers are a friendly group!

We spent four days at St. Joseph State Park then headed for a night at Camp Gulf RV Park in Miramar, Florida.  From there we spent a night at Shepard State Park in Mississippi, which felt spooky and creepy - it sits near a housing development (a first for us) and has a very dirty bayou.  We then headed to Texas and the Village Creek State Park in Lumberton, which is a nice park that we would like to spend more time exploring.  It was our last night before heading home and back to the real world.  Hope you enjoy our photos and videos and we hope to see some of yours.

St. Joseph State Park, Cape San Blas, FL - Gulf & Marsh SideWednesday, May 22, 2013
St. Joseph State Park is a peninsula with beaches on the Gulf of Mexico side and calmer waters on the St. Joseph Bay side.  Both sides are beautiful.  The peninsula is narrow with big beautiful dunes that protect the Gulf side from waves and some of the wind.  There are trails and roads that make it easy to go exploring.  We were there in December 2012, around Christmas day,  there were some strong, red flag, winds and angry waves as well as tornadoes along the Gulf Coast.  We stayed a few days longer waiting for the storm to pass but we were safe at the park.  Merry Christmas.

We loved the St. Joseph State Park in Cape San Blas, Florida.  It is a beautiful state park with lots of critters.  We saw an owl in a pine tree next to our campsite and he put on a show for us, quite the poser!  A hawk was guarding one of the bathhouses and we were told there are lots of snakes in the warmer season (our visit was in December 2012).  We saw lots of seagulls and other sea birds as well as sand crabs and jelly fish that had washed ashore.  Would you believe that we saw two dolphins make a very brief appearance just off shore, if we blinked we would of missed them!  Lots of small sea shells on the beach.  Fun!

Camp Gulf RV Park, Miramar Beach, FLWednesday, May 22, 2013
Camp Gulf RV Park is located east of Destin and west of  Panama City, in Miramar Beach, Florida.  Destin area offers beautiful beaches, shopping, dining, boating, golf and much more. Camp Gulf has cabins for rent with all the comforts of home if you don't have an RV.  It's a great place for a family vacation.

They have a few RV sites right on the beach overlooking the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico, guess where we stayed?  The beaches are made of sugar white sands and are awesome.  There are two solar heated swimming pools, a hot tub,  kiddie slide, big clean bathroom/showers, laundry, community room, WiFi and cable and more.

Great place to "camp"!

Camp Gulf is located east of Destin in Miramar Beach, Florida, on the Emerald Coast Parkway aka Hwy 98.  This is a great RV park that also has cabins for rent.  There are a few RV sites on the beach that look onto the Gulf of Mexico - guess where we stayed?  The shower/bathrooms are big and clean & they have a heated pool in the winter.  Great RV park.  Check out feeding the sea gulls in flight. Cool video.

Traveling Home to Austin, TXWednesday, May 22, 2013
After we left St. Joseph State Park in Florida, we stopped for one nighters at various campgrounds on our way back home to Austin, Texas.   We stayed at Camp Gulf right on the beach which was nice but crowded in Miramar Beach, Florida, then drove through the George Wallace Tunnel on Interstate 10 in downtown Mobile, Alabama.  Next stop was at Shepard State Park in Gautier, Mississippi.  This state park is located among a housing development, something we hadn't experienced before.  It felt creepy and spooky to us and the bayou was very dirty and filled with trash, bed frame and much more.  We thought that a state park would be cleaner, our opinion.  We happily left early the next morning and headed into Texas for the last stop of our vacation at the Village Creek State Park in Lumberton, Texas.  This is a great state park with lots of canoeing, kayaking, hiking biking, critters, fishing and more.  We rode our bikes on the roads and trails and tried not to get lost!

We spent the last day of vacation driving across east Texas headed for Austin.  We had a great trip and experienced all kinds of weather but overall for December the weather wasn't too cold, but we did stay an extra day at St. Joseph State Park to avoid tornadoes in the Alabama, Mississippi area!  We love long vacations, we can relax for awhile knowing that we still have time to play instead of thinking about going back home to the real world!!!

Mobile, AL TunnelWednesday, May 22, 2013

When driving west on Innerstate 10 in Mobile, Alabama, you go through the George  Wallace Tunnel,  a pair of road tunnels that carry Interstate 10 in Mobile.  Kind of claustrophobic and cool at the same time!  Big rigs, cars, trucks and motor homes all take the same tunnel.

Shepard State Park in located next to a housing development in Gautier, Mississippi.  We missed the sign and had to turn around, we are not used to state parks being in the middle of town!   We had a RV site above the bayou which was very dirty and full of trash.  We found this state park kind of spooky and creepy, just our opinion.

Village Creek State Park in Lumberton, Texas, is a great place to go kayaking, canoeing, swimming, birding, biking, hiking, fishing or study nature and wildlife.   We stayed in our RV and rode around the park on our bikes, lots of roads and trails.  Nice big trees and RV sites, we enjoyed this state park.
