The Graceful Ghost our Steamboat RideMonday, September 24, 2012
The Graceful Ghost is a replica of an 1800's era steamboat.  She is the last known wood burning, steam powered, stern paddle-wheel touring boat in the world and the sound she makes as the steam is used is great.  In our video Alan has captured the sounds of the steamboat during our ride.  I got to "drive" the boat and the Captain said if I messed up he would feed me to the gators......he kept calling me "gator bait"!  Alan thought that was soooo funny!?  Should I be worried?  The steamboat is located at the Shady Glade Marina in Uncertain, Texas, and is a Coast Guard Approved vessel.

We enjoyed our ride through Caddo Lake, a slow peaceful ride with beautiful autumn colors.  Our Captain was a great tour guide, filling us with a great history of the area.  We took lots of photos, we hope that you find your favorites and enjoy them.  We try to get great photos and we are learning to be better photographers.

Caddo Lake State ParkMonday, September 24, 2012
Caddo Lake State Park is located in north east Texas, in Karnack.  The lake was created by a gigantic log jam known as the Great Raft and is the only naturally formed lake in the state of Texas.  There are about 71 species of fish, as well as awesome cypress trees, water lilies, alligators, turtles, snakes, beavers, nutria (a large river rat) and many more critters as well as deer.  In the 1900's, the lake and the surrounding area was drilled for oil.

In 1541, during the DeSoto expedition from Spain, first contact was made with the Caddo Indians who were settled on the fertile land around the lake.  They hunted with bows and arrows, they fished, grew corn, beans and squash as well as developing and maintaining trade routes. In 1893, the US government set up the Dawes Committee to privatize the Indian land and sell it to the white people.  1901, the Dawes Act dissolved the reservations that were left, giving each Indian family 160 acres of land they already owned and sold the rest of the land to the white settlers.  But by 1906, the Burke Act took away the land the US government had given to the Indians by allowing only "competent" Indians to own land and of course all Indians were declared incompetent!  They are now mainly located in the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma.

Caddo Lake is truly a beautiful and bountiful area that we can all enjoy now.  We enjoyed our visit very much.
