Mush & Alga's Adventure: Holland America Cruise Part 2: St. Maarten & the Bahamas
12-14-2010
In St. Maarten we went on a tour ride that the first video for this adventure has around 11 minutes of showing the countryside. Then when we reach Port de Marigot, we went on a semi-submersible boat where we went "down below" and saw underwater. From there we went to the Bahamas and the crystal clear water where I got to use my underwater video for the first time.

Half Moon Cay, BahamasSunday, September 09, 2012
We arrived at Half Moon Cay early in the morning and had eight hours to spend at the beach.  As we have learned after taking two whole cruises is that you don't get much time to spend on land, the ships prefer that you are on board spending money.  Another thing we learned is that many cruise lines have private islands, which in our limited experience means no towns or local cultures to explore.....we were a captive audience!  That was the case at Half Moon Cay.........but the beach and the water were the most beautiful we have seen to date.  You could have paid for horseback riding, a snorkeling trip, parasailing and more (can't remember all that was offered).  We missed a lunch that was served as we were busy exploring the island so we had to wait until dinner to eat.  We walked as far away from the boat as we could and discovered a nice reef a short distance from shore.......the water is so clear that the only way you know we are in the water is that the fish are there!  We love snorkeling and are getting better at it (ha ha), but the water was chilly.  We recommend a "skin shirt & shorts", it's like a wet suit only thinner.....makes a HUGE difference, I know because I get cold.

We were back on the ship by 4pm and headed out to sea within the hour.  We would be back in Fort Lauderdale,  by 7am the next day.

The beach at Half Moon Cay, Bahamas.  This is what we call a "captive stop".....the cruise line runs everything and there is no town or locals just us tourists.  The water is absolutely amazing and so clear......wish you could see it too.

Day 5- St. MaartinSunday, September 09, 2012
On day 5 of our cruise we arrived in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles.  The island is in the north easten Caribbean ( 190 miles east of Puerto Rico) and is divided about 60/40 between France and the Netherlands.  The Dutch side (St. Maarten) where we docked has the most people, about 41,000, the French side (St. Martin) has about 37,000 people.  The island's main airport is the Princess Juliana International Airport located on the Dutch side in St. Maarten.  The French side also has an airport, the Aéroport de Grand Case or L'Espérance Airport.

One of the bad things about a cruise is the limited time spent at each stop.  We were on the island eight hours and had lots to see so we ate breakfast and left for our bus tour of the island.  Our guide was informative and we got to see the city and countryside from our tour bus.

Our first stop was the Harold Jack Lookout Point which is one of the highest points on the island.  We looked down upon the French side toward the town of Marigot.  There was a desalination plant just below the lookout that supplies good water for the people.   There were also lots of very expensive boats (Alan was beside himself).  After we took our photos our next stop was in Marigot (French side) where we had 45 minutes to shop.  They steered us to a local store but we discovered the outdoor market just down the road where we bought a lot of souvenirs as they let us negotiate prices down to some of the best deals we've ever gotten.  Maybe it was just a slow day for them.

Our next stop was in Grand Case where we took a semi-submersible glass bottomed boat (where you go down below when it's time to look underwater) out to Creole Rock to see the reef and fish.  The dock was near some cool hotels on the beach and mountainside that overlooked the oh so beautiful blue water.....can't tell you how pretty the water was.  The reef was not good.  I think our guide told us a lot of it had died (don't hold me to that) and the fish showed up when a diver fed them for all of us tourists to see.  Just being on the water was worth the trip.  We left Grand Case and continued to make a circle around the island to return to the cruise ship.  We like the less populated areas of the island-more mountains and farming.

We departed St. Maarten just before dark and headed out to sea.  We took so many photos of the sunset......it was beautiful.  The west side of the ship shows the setting sun with the reds, yellows and oranges and when you looked to the east all the colors were pink, lavender, blues.....amazing that we got such different photos of the same sunset!  The smoke stack at the back of the ship belched out a big puff of black smoke that just hung in the air and as we moved forward it was still hanging in the air, it made for a great photo.

We have two videos for this area, one while riding on the tour bus where you can hear some of our guides comments on the area.  The other video is of the glass bottom boat ride and footage of leaving the island.  We had a good quick visit.
