Mush & Alga's Adventure: Holland America Cruise Part 1: Port, Grand Turk & San Juan
12-10-2010
This was our second cruise and we got a balcony suite this time (the only way to go). We had a good time but this is definately not a party cruise as most people were elderly and in bed by 8 pm-nothing like our Carnival cruise that was a constant party by all. The water was great for snorkeling in Grand Turk and the fort at San Juan was awesome.

San Juan, Puerto RicoSunday, September 09, 2012
We had a 8 hour stop in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, so we tried to make the most of it.  We didn't book a tour from the ship, instead we found many buses/vans just outside of the ship that would give us a hour tour around the city.  Not as expensive as the boat tours (maybe not as good?) but we learned a lot from our driver/guide.  We toured Old San Juan, a 465 year old neighborhood that was originally a military fort/stronghold.  The colorful city has charming architecture, narrow streets lined with a blue stone cast out of furnace slag called adoquine. The city has over 400 restored Spanish colonial buildings dating from the 16th and 17th century.  More tourists visit San Juan every year than any other spot in the Caribbean, maybe because of the tropical weather, beaches, casinos......and the fact Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United State.

Among other sights, we saw the outside of the capital building, the Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, a colonial-era cemetery located in Old San Juan, the outside of  Fort San Felipe del Morro fortress, the many colorful and charming buildings, enjoyed some local food and had coffee at a Starbucks!  We had a fun day and this was our only stop that we stayed at after dark, yeah!  There were three or four cruise ships at the port lit up like Christmas trees....pretty.  By 9 pm we were leaving San Juan and headed out to sea. Early  tomorrow morning we will be in St. Maarten.

First Three Days of Cruise: Leaving, At Sea, Grand TurkSunday, September 09, 2012
Our second cruise was on the Westerdam, Holland America.  We flew from Austin, via Jet Blue to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  So far our Jet Blue experience has been great, more leg room and you can watch TV which makes the trip go by lots faster.

We arrived in Fort Lauderdale the day before our cruise with plans to stay at the Rodeway Inn & Suites Airport/Cruise Port, 2440 West State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL, they had wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor.  We figured out very quickly that this hotel was not what was represented.....they left us waiting for their hotel shuttle almost two hours after we called them every thirty minutes while they kept saying they would be right there.  It was almost dark when they finally picked us up....turned out we were about six minutes away from the hotel!  As soon as we walked into the lobby, it smelled bad (musty and moldy), then we noticed huge stains on the carpet down the hall a short distance from the check-in desk.....then they showed us our room and it smelled worse than the lobby!  By now it was dark, we were tired and didn't know if we could even get another room at a different hotel.  We had to pay another $30 to upgrade to a newly remodeled room that didn't smell.  At breakfast the dining room attendent informed us that we had to tip---everything was self service!  Bad experience all the way around.  We will never stay here again and we don't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Took a taxi to the Cruise Port on day 1, checked in and when they let us board we went to the top of the ship and watched the boats going by on the Intracoastal Waterway.  Alan loves boats of all kinds and was thrilled when we saw a submarine doing manuvers.  We left the dock just as the sun was setting and headed out to sea.  You'll see in the video that the seas were rough, lots of people were feeling the ship rocking and rolling....look at the pool water sloushing around.  We explored the ship, had some dinner then noticed that most people went to bed after dinner......nothing like the Carnival cruise we took, they were party animals.  If you want more action, this is not the cruise for you!

On day 2, we were at sea all day and the was rocking again today, almost made us seasick.  We spent the day exploring the ship, eating and watching the awesome sunsets.  We learned from our first cruise not to eat too much, think we actually lost some weight on this cruise!

On day 3, we docked at Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, at 7am and had until 2pm to be back on the ship.  Not a lot of time to explore this "captive stop" but we were determined to do so.  When we got off the ship we were met by two cruiseline photographers and we took their picture instead of them taking ours.  We then toured the Cruise Center, to check out the stores and their souvieners (you see lots of the same merchandise at all your stops).  They did have a Margaritaville and a swimming pool in case you didn't want to swim in the ocean .  We left for our snorkeling excursion from the Cruise Center.  We had lots of fun snorkeling and got to see the stingray and baracudas up close and personal.  We have underwater photos.

After snorkeling we walked the beach and enjoyed the white sands and that  water is so mesmorizing....we couldn't absorb enough of that blue water!  We were back on the ship before 2pm, and out to sea about an hour later for another night on the ocean.
